‘I feel privileged to add to such an important and vital part of our country’s culture,’ LEA says
A life enrichment aide (LEA) will be sharing with Willows Estate residents the importance of black Canadians’ contribution to the culture of the country.
To mark Black History Month, Azaria Kanda plans to engage residents in an upcoming activity at the Aurora long-term care home.
Willows Estate currently has a diverse range of residents in the home, some of whom have higher cognitive abilities. The LEA is often striving for ways to involve that population of residents in current events through education and discussion.
“I have an exciting project I’m working on for the residents,” Azaria tells The OMNIway.
“In honour of Black History Month throughout the month of February, I’m putting together a presentation that illuminates the history and origin of this yearly celebration of black history.
“As a black Canadian myself, I feel privileged to add such an important and vital part of our country’s culture into the many cultural activities we have for our residents in the home.”
The LEA anticipates highlighting a variety of topics that include legacies and institutions, noteworthy historical figures both Canadian and American, the history of black Canadian communities and organizational and educational resources.
“I will try my best to find a short visual clip to add to this presentation for residents to watch,” Azaria adds. “I’m still in the process of preparing everything.”
Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present, the Government of Canada says.
The 2020 theme for Black History Month is Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past. This was inspired by the theme of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).
