‘I am proud of Sylvia and her commitment, passion and strong work ethic in our home,’ says administrator Linda Pierce

For 25 years, health-care aide Sylvia O’Brien has been striving to enhance quality of life and the resident experience for people living at Village Green, which is why she was nominated for the Greater Napanee long-term care home’s 2019 Everyday Hero Award.

Village Green administrator Linda Pierce, who nominated Sylvia for the accolade, says Sylvia is often taking advantage of educational opportunities to enhance resident care, and she will share what she learns with colleagues.

The additional training Sylvia has received has resulted in improved outcomes for residents, Linda notes.

The administrator adds that Sylvia explores different methods of working with residents and makes a point of learning residents’ history and using this knowledge in care plans.

Over the past year, Sylvia has become more involved with Village Green’s Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) team, which strives to reduce responsive behaviours and improve quality of life for residents affected by cognitive impairment.

“Sylvia has worked with the residents and staff on a variety of initiatives that helped support the individual residents experiencing a change in their well-being, concentrating on strategies that help minimize or reduce changing behaviours,” Linda says.

“Sylvia has shared education, helped organize a new Behaviour Support week (that was) filled with great fun, laughter, education and planning.”

The Everyday Hero Award is given out annually by each of OMNI Health Care’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.

Additionally, Sylvia was one of four Ontario long-term care home staff members to receive a Personal Support Worker Leadership Award from the Ontario Long Term Care Association during the organization’s conference in September.

“I am proud of Sylvia and her commitment, passion and strong work ethic in our home,” Linda says.
