Things shaping up to be merry and bright at Maplewood

Brighton home hosts bazaar, two Christmas parties

It will be a holly, jolly two weeks upcoming at Maplewood.

The OMNI Health Care long-term care in Brighton has three holiday season events beginning with its annual Christmas bazaar Nov. 30.

The bazaar provides a chance for family members and others to stop in and support the long-term care home’s residents’ council fund by buying baked goods and crafts made by residents and staff.

Life enrichment aide (LEA) Rosanne Blackburn was busy making a wreath when she paused to speak with The OMNIway. Residents help make decisions about the design and offer hands-on help as they are able.

“It’s nice for them to see they’re making accomplishments,” Rosanne says.

Residents and staff also decorated mason jars containing the dry ingredients for cookies and made “reindeers” using hot chocolate powder and marshmallows. Other seniors knitted and crocheted dishcloths.

As for baking, they’ll have cakes, meat pies, cinnamon buns, banana breads and a number of other sweet treats for sale. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. The bazaar typically raises about $1,000 for the home, which is funnelled into outings and entertainment for residents year-round.

Meanwhile on Dec. 5, Maplewood and members of the Brighton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be hosting a Christmas party for residents. Legion members are bringing Santa Claus to the home and gifts for each resident, while Maplewood will provide the refreshments.

Topping if off is the Christmas party for residents and their family members Dec. 7. Everyone will gather for entertainment, punch and appetizers to celebrate the holiday season.
