Residents enjoying the great outdoors: LEC
From enjoying ice cream on the patio to watching kids ride their bicycles, residents are embracing all-things summer at Almonte Country Haven.
When life enrichment co-ordinator Naomi Redner asks residents how they’d like to spend their time, she overwhelmingly hears of their desires to just be outside as much as possible during the nice weather.
To accommodate those requests, the Almonte long-term care home hosts a variety of activities and opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors.
Almonte Country Haven currently holds a barbecue every other Thursday. About 10-12 residents take part with a different group heading outdoors each time.
“We’re doing lots of barbecues and picnics and ice cream on the patio when it’s not too, too hot,” Naomi says.
“Everything tastes better outside,” says Naomi about the residents’ feedback.
“Eating outside is the big thing. They just want to be outside.” The residents particularly enjoy the hamburgers off the grill.
The home also offers picnics on the patio every Monday. Residents have devilled eggs and sandwiches garnished with fresh herbs and vegetables from Almonte’s gardens on site. “They love the picnics as well and they’re eating fresh from the garden.”
It’s not all about food as there are plenty of visuals outside that residents enjoy as well, Naomi says.
The front patio, shaded with an awning and usually featuring a breeze, has a view of Almonte’s 12 flower and vegetable gardens.
Residents also like watching children on their bikes and families going by pushing carriages, along with the other neighbourhood activities.
