For the third straight year, the Stuff a Stocking for a Senior project has touched down at Streamway Villa to ensure that each of the Cobourg long-term care home’s 59 residents has a stocking filled with gifts to open Christmas morning.

The Stuff a Stocking for a Senior project was launched by friends Vicky Davis of Cobourg and Lynn Stewart of Orangeville in 2017. The project sends stockings stuffed with presents to long-term care homes, retirement homes and Community Living Ontario residences to bring Christmas cheer to seniors.

Vicky and Lynn stopped by Streamway Villa recently to drop off the stockings, which will be delivered to each of the home’s residents on Dec. 25. Inside the stockings are items such as chocolates, crossword puzzles, socks and toiletries.

In 2018, Vicky told The OMNIway she was inspired to start the program while visiting her mother, who was living at a long-term care home. She says she noticed some residents were not getting family visits and saw an opportunity to make a difference.

She then contacted Lynn, who had many years’ experience organizing a Christmas hamper and stocking-stuffing program for Orangeville seniors, to suggest working together to extend the stocking-stuffing program to Cobourg.

Aleya, a member of Grace Christian Reformed Church, is pictured here with two stockings stuffed with presents the church recently donated to Streamway Villa residents.

Vicky and Lynn contacted Streamway Villa life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) Christina Doughty in August to ask if she could help advertise the project on social media, which she did.

Christina says many businesses around Northumberland County have helped support the project, which she says attests to the value the initiative delivers to seniors.

In addition to the stockings delivered by Vicky and Lynn, members of Grace Christian Reformed Church also stopped by Streamway Villa recently to donate stuffed stockings along with baked goods for residents and staff members to enjoy.

Christina says this outpour of support for residents has a positive impact.

“It brings them back to their childhood,” she says.

The LEC adds that the Stuff a Stocking for a Senior program’s mission has been accomplished at Streamway Villa.

“Vicky and Lynn’s mission was simple: to spread the holiday cheer,” she says. “Many seniors go through difficult times during the holidays, so they wanted to make sure that on Christmas morning that people were still there for them.”
