Cook, LEA host dance party to boost spirits during global pandemic
When she’s in the dining room, Streamway Villa cook Litsa Christodoulou can’t help but notice how music during meals inspires humming and singing by some of the residents (click here to watch video).
So Litsa recently approached life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) Christina Doughty with the idea of hosting a dance party one afternoon for residents and staff at the Cobourg long-term care home.
The well-received activity lightened the mood for those working and living at Streamway Villa during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was fantastic,” Christina says.
“To look around and see everyone engaged…this is a very difficult time for everybody so dancing the stress away and getting rid of reality for that moment” was appreciated by all.
Litsa agrees the April 2 dance party was a success.
“We were trying to come up with some ideas to keep the residents’ spirits up,” Litsa tells The OMNIway.
“We wanted to make sure we kept smiles on their faces.”
There was singing, humming, toe-tapping and dancing by residents and staff alike. “They were all laughing and smiling, even some people who we haven’t seen smile in days. They always say music soothes the soul.”
The dancing took place in the dining room and Streamway Villa ensured it was maintaining appropriate social distancing. Staff members also were diligently sanitizing the environment and cleaning residents’ hands before and after the activity.
Litsa hopes there will be another dance party for residents and staff in the future.
“If we can, we’d be willing to do that again,” the cook says.
