PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – One of the many things that makes Riverview Manor registered practical nurse (RPN) Kristen Blundell stand out is her constant drive to enhance the quality of life for people living at the Peterborough long-term care home, say her colleagues.

Kristen’s resourcefulness and dedication to enhancing quality at Riverview Manor have earned her this year’s Inspired Leadership Award.

An 11-year team member at Riverview Manor, Kristen wears many hats. She always takes up things that need to be done, says administrator Mary Anne Greco.

Kristen has shown leadership through her interest in upgrading her skills, explains Mary Anne, while presenting Kristen with her Inspired Leadership Award at an Oct. 25 ceremony.

Mary Anne notes that Kristen has taken additional advanced wound care training and has become a “vital” team member when it comes to maintaining residents’ skin integrity.

Currently, Kristen is spearheading a monthly group meeting that examines resident falls and brainstorms with other team members to find solutions to mitigating the risk of falls.

Mary Anne says Kristen also does an excellent job of helping new RPNs learn the ropes at Riverview Manor.

“Kristen plays an active role in wound care and has provided several staff members with direction and supervision relating to (wound care),” the administrator says. “Staff will approach Kristen if they have questions; she is very dedicated and motivated.”

OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values. Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work.

OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont., in May.

Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.
