Home marks National Nursing Week with celebration, prizes

Rosebridge Manor is giving a shout-out to its registered staff.

The Jasper long-term care home is marking National Nursing Week by celebrating its registered nurses (RNs) and registered practical nurses (RPNs) and treating them to prizes and gift baskets.

“It’s about value and respect,” says director of care Connie-Gail Crowder about the reasons to participate in National Nursing Week.

“It’s about giving back … and a sense of belonging to the long-term community.”

Celebrating Nursing Week also ties in well with OMNI’s corporate values of creating hope, purpose and belonging in long-term care, Crowder notes.

In addition, nurses spend so much time working at the home and this gives Rosebridge the opportunity to recognize them for their hard work and contributions.

Rosebridge has had daily celebrations in past years during National Nursing Week but opted for this year’s format because of off-site training sessions running concurrently with National Nursing Week.

To win prizes, time off and a gardening or “treat yourself” gift basket, Rosebridge asked nurses to complete a Happy Nursing Week 2018 word search containing more than 25 nursing-related words. The completed, signed puzzle goes into a draw box. There will be three winners.

“They seem pretty excited about it,” Crowder says.

The winners are being announced Friday (May 11) and all registered staff members are being celebrated with cake and refreshments.

Rosebridge Manor has 10 RNs and nine RPNs, having recently hired three new RPNs and the home is excited to have those staff members join them.

Also during Nursing Week, registered staff members – one member from each shift – are attending nurses’ training and education on wound care and IV therapy from Medical Mart.

Crowder notes May 19 is PSW Day and Rosebridge will also be celebrating its PSWs when that day falls on the calendar.

Held the week of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12 every year since 1965, National Nursing Week aims to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions nurses make in our health-care system.
