‘They’re available to us whenever we need them for education’
Rosebridge Manor will be hosting a Coffee Break in February. This is one way the Jasper, Ont. long-term care home is giving back to the local Alzheimer Society chapter.
The home has a valuable partnership with the Alzheimer Society Lanark Leeds Grenville, says Kathy Barr, the life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) at Rosebridge Manor.
“I’ve had them in here in the past to do presentations for our families and our staff,” Kathy says.
“They’re available to us whenever we need them for education.”
The chapter also keeps Rosebridge Manor apprised of Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) training sessions. GPA is a dementia care education curriculum based on a person-centred care approach. It’s designed for interdisciplinary point of care staff.
“We have opportunities for our staff to go and get the training through the Alzheimer Society,” which is helpful, Kathy notes.
The LEC says she’s hoping to hold a coffee break next month to support the organization.
Coffee Break is a nationwide annual fundraiser where friends, co-workers and customers gather in communities across Canada to raise funds for their local Alzheimer Society chapters.
For many years, Rosebridge Manor has been accustomed to having a high population of its residents diagnosed with dementia.
“Most of the residents we are working with require our help, invitations, reminders and guidance to activities so we try to make it work for whatever level they are at,” Kathy notes. “There is a higher majority who need that intervention.”
January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
“Stigma is one of the biggest barriers for people with dementia to live fully with dignity and respect,” an Alzheimer Society Canada press release states.
“That’s why we’re excited to kick off the second year of our awareness campaign—Yes. I live with dementia. Let me help you understand — to spark conversations and encourage Canadians to see dementia differently.”
Rosebridge Manor is expanding its Montessori program and behaviour support resources for residents. Read more in an upcoming story in The OMNIway.
