Barbecues, spirit days on the calendar

OMNI Health Care long-term care homes are embracing all things summer, ranging from barbecued food to baseball caps.

Village Green’s annual barbecue brought 111 people together to enjoy food, entertainment and socializing at the Greater Napanee long-term care home on July 22.

The barbecue – one of Village Green’s yearly flagship events – brought together residents, their families, friends and staff members for an afternoon of fun and laughter and, of course, top-notch food.

“It was a really nice day,” life enrichment aide Vicki Hartin tells The OMNIway.

Notices were sent out to families, encouraging them to attend and to bring as many people as they wished.

After the barbecue, everyone went outside to the garden for live entertainment, courtesy of musician Bill Dunn, a fan favourite at the home.

Meanwhile at Rosebridge Manor, staff and residents didn’t let rain stand in the way of their barbecue.  The Jasper, Ont. long-term care home’s annual resident and family party was July 27.

Instead of cancelling, life enrichment co-ordinator Kathy Barr got together with a group of residents and, as a team, they decided to spruce up the activity room with decorations and host the event indoors.

Staff members from all departments chipped in, and the residents and their families were given their party.

“The kitchen went all out,” Kathy says.  “The residents and I decorated (the home) – we put tissue-paper flowers all over the activity room to make it look as pretty as possible, and we had our flute player and guitarist come in to perform.”

More than 30 residents and families attended the affair. Rosebridge Manor hosts a resident and family member party every summer with alternating themes.

In the Peterborough area, an OMNI home recently held a spirit-boosting fun week.
