The Ontario government has eased some restrictions in LTC homes to allow safe outdoor visits between residents and their loved ones
It was certainly a happy Father’s Day at Frost Manor.
Many of the Lindsay, Ont. long-term care home’s dads were able to have safe outdoor visits with their loved ones on June 21, three days after the Ontario government eased some restrictions on visitation that were put in place when the COVID-19 pandemic began in March.
“All Father’s Day we had outdoor visits and window visits for residents,” Frost Manor life enrichment co-ordinator Lyndsay Burton tells The OMNIway.
“We are using our front patio area and we have a little spot where the residents can be shaded out from the sun and we have (a staff member) to help facilitate it.”
Frost Manor, along with OMNI Health Care’s other 17 long-term care homes, has been closed to everyone but essential visitors to protect residents and team members during the ongoing global pandemic.
However, on June 18 the province began allowing homes in the province to facilitate outdoor visits between residents and their loved ones, provided they are supervised by a staff member, with safety protocols, such as physical distancing, firmly in place.
The staff member assigned to oversee resident-family visits screens family members prior to visits by asking them questions and taking their temperature. Families also need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the past 14 days.
“It has been going really well; the families are jumping on board, and if they can’t (meet the government’s safety requirements) they will opt for a window visit instead,” Lyndsay says.
“The residents are enjoying it, and the families love that they can see their loved ones in person again.”
Aside from outdoor and window visits, Frost Manor has continued to offer video calls for residents.
“We have really been keeping the families involved as much as we can through this whole process,” Lyndsay says.
