After 37 years serving Frost Manor residents, Vi O’Leary, the much-loved life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) at the Lindsay long-term care home, has retired.

Vi’s last day on the job was April 5, so her colleagues and representatives from OMNI Health Care’s head office led a celebratory tea at Frost Manor that was also attended by residents, family members, friends, volunteers and other LECs representing OMNI homes.

Several speakers reflected on their time with Vi, shared memories and wished her the best in her retirement.

Speakers included Frost Manor administrator Connie Abrams, OMNI president and CEO Patrick McCarthy, OMNI chief operating officer Shawn Riel and Frost Manor residents’ council president Diane Hickman.

“Many laughs, tears and fond memories were shared,” says life enrichment aide Lyndsay Irwin. “It was a really nice afternoon. … It was a really good day. I think she was really happy with the turnout of people.”

Vi began her career at Frost Manor in as a nurse and eventually moved to the life enrichment department. After 37 years, it will be a different atmosphere around Frost Manor without Vi, Lyndsay says.

Lyndsay adds that one of the major strengths Vi brought to Frost Manor during her career was her ability to connect with other long-term care homes and organizations in the region.

Through these connections, Frost Manor often partnered with other homes for outings, which resulted in residents making new friends and created new opportunities for excursions.

“She also had ties with all of the churches in the area, and she had lots of long-time, dedicated volunteers,” Lyndsay says.

Lyndsay adds that the large number of people who turned up to wish Vi a happy retirement speaks to the value she brought to the home for 37 years.

“The whole dining room was filled with people wanting to wish her well,” she says.
