Maplewood’s staff ‘sets us above other homes in the community’
Brighton home celebrates Nursing Week, gives thanks
From a pizza party to a superhero theme day, Maplewood expressed its gratitude recently for its valued nursing staff. The Brighton long-term care home marked National Nursing Week. National Nursing Week ran from May 6-12.
At Maplewood, employees enjoyed ice-cream sundaes, loot bags and received new name tags throughout the week in addition to the pizza party and the theme day.
Rachel Corkery, the home’s administrator, says marking National Nursing Week was a critical opportunity to recognize the staff.
“I think too often staff feel under-appreciated for all that they do,” Rachel says. “As a manager, I often find myself after the fact thinking how I should have made a better effort to show my appreciation to staff. National Nursing Week gives us an opportunity to make up … for all of those missed opportunities of appreciation.”
Nationally, the week also draws attention to nurses, increasing the awareness of the public, policy-makers and governments of the many contributions of nursing to the well-being of Canadians.
In 1971, the International Council of Nurses designated May 12, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, as International Nurses’ Day.
“Here at Maplewood, our staff is what sets us above other homes in the community,” Rachel says. “It is our staff and the care they provide in all departments that make us the No. 1 choice for many residents and their families.
“Our reputation as a home where our residents are not just cared for but are cared about is built from the hard work and dedication of the staff.”
Maplewood also hosted a dress-down, casual day for staff and handed out several gift cards throughout the week to express appreciation.
“I am always so proud to be part of this team. I often say I get to ride on the coat-tails through all of this. I am truly thankful every day for the efforts of the everyday heroes in our home.”
