‘I just do what I do every day because I care about the residents’
Pleasant Meadow Manor life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) Chris Garden has been named the recipient of the Norwood long-term care home’s 2016 Inspired Leader Award.
OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leader Award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values and outstanding leadership and dedication to their work.
The award was presented to Chris during the home’s Dec. 8 Christmas party for residents, family members, volunteers and staff.
Asked what makes a person a strong leader, Chris says leading by example and treating everyone – residents, families and co-workers – the way you want to be treated is most important.
She adds that in a long-term care setting, leaders need to be positive and always keep the residents top of mind.
“I consider (Pleasant Meadow Manor) a family and whatever other things are going on in your life, you leave it at the door because this is the residents’ home and we work at their home,” Chris says.
Chris says she was honoured that her colleagues nominated her for the award.
“It felt really good to be acknowledged by my peers,” she says. “I just do what I do every day because I care about the residents.”
Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero Award recipients were announced at OMNI’s managers’ forum in Kingston in May. Since then, homes have been hosting their own award ceremonies to honour award recipients.
