RAI co-ordinator receives West Lake Terrace’s Inspired Leader award
RAI co-ordinator Karen Keeler has been a champion at helping ensure West Lake Terrace’s front-line staff members’ coding is reflective of their hard work.
This is a major reason why Keeler is deserving of OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leader award, says Neil Peterson, the Prince Edward County long-term care home’s administrator.
RAI-MDS is the standardized resident assessment instrument used in each of Ontario’s long-term care homes.
Ensuring that RAI-MDS coding is reflective of all information related to resident care is crucial because this data is sent to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
In many cases, Peterson says Keeler helped staff members recognize their own strengths.
“With Karen leading them by encouraging (staff members) to show pride in their hard work, they are really improving residents’ lives,” he tells The OMNIway. “Karen is really the driving force in making sure our statistical data is truly reflecting what they are actually doing.”
Staff members seeing their outcomes improved through RAI-MDS can have a large-scale positive impact, Peterson says.
“When they see the numbers go up, the pride of their ownership starts to show as a result and they’re happier with their work environment,” he adds
West Lake Terrace staff members voted for their peers earlier this year for the home’s Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero awards. Keeler received the Inspired Leader award, while personal support worker Tracy Struthers received the Everyday Hero award.
OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leader award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate outstanding leadership and dedication to their work.
Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero award recipients were announced at OMNI’s managers’ forum in Kingston in May. Since then, homes have been hosting their own award ceremonies to honour award recipients.
