Karen Coulter’s love of life is remembered at memorial service
‘Enjoy every moment, even the small ones, as they are all precious’
SELBY, Ont. – “Enjoy every moment, even the small ones, as they are all precious.”
These are the words of advice life enrichment co-ordinator Karen Coulter left for residents and her colleagues at Village Green. They were read at her April 24 memorial service held at the Greater Napanee long-term care home.
Karen passed away March 14 after a short illness. Since residents and many staff members were not able to attend Karen’s funeral in Milton, her co-workers organized a second service at the home where she worked for 11 years.
While there were many tears shed by those attending, there was even more laughter as her friends and children recounted Karen’s carefree spirit, love of life and colourful sense of humour.
If you knew Karen, you’d know that laughter is what she would have wanted.
“(Karen) was an incredible person,” Village Green administrator Linda Pierce told those attending the service. “She was very devoted, she was kind, caring … and she always worked to do the greater good.”
Resident Kimberley Wickens said Karen was her “confidant,” someone she could always talk with. “I will miss her,” she said.
Village Green director of care Mary Lee Turcotte remembered Karen as someone who always put others first and who went above and beyond the call of duty to help people.
“Karen was always her happiest when she was making everyone else happy,” Mary Lee said. “There is no question (of) her complete dedication and her love and friendship here at Village Green, and especially for our residents and families and our staff.”
A touching moment at the service came when the Village Green resident choir sang. The choir, which was formed late last year, was Karen’s brainchild, and she was proud of the residents’ accomplishments.
The most telling quote of the day about Karen’s mindfulness of others and her own worldview comes from Karen herself in her message to residents and staff.
“Be happy for all the wonderful moments we shared together. I want you all to live life to the fullest as I did.”
