Riverview Manor RPN demonstrates passion for providing residents with a high quality of life, her co-workers say

Registered practical nurse (RPN) Kelly Murney has shown passion for continuous learning, sharing knowledge with her colleagues and being a mentor since she joined the Riverview Manor team 25 years ago.

These are some of the factors her colleagues cited when they nominated Kelly for the Peterborough long-term care home’s 2019 Inspired Leadership Award.

Kelly started at Riverview Manor in August 1994 as a health-care aide. Kelly would go on to complete the educational requirements to become an RPN. Additionally, Kelly has completed training in the Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) program through Hospice Peterborough.

Her goal is always to provide the highest quality care possible to residents, Kelly’s co-workers say.

“Kelly is committed to resident-centred care,” her colleagues write in their nomination. “Kelly exhibits strong advocacy skills for our residents, promoting effective management of pain (and) discomfort to ensure optimal quality of living for our residents.”

Whenever the opportunity arises, Kelly shares her learnings with those she works with and community partners.

Her co-workers note that when new RPNs and personal support workers join the Riverview Manor team, Kelly helps them with their orientation and provides encouragement.

Kelly was presented with her Inspired Leadership Award at a ceremony held at Riverview Manor on Sept. 25 that also honoured the home’s 2019 Everyday Hero and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.

After receiving her award, Kelly said she was pleased to be acknowledged for her work.

“It was unexpected, but I am grateful,” she said.
