Sandra Goddard’s colleagues commend her thoughtfulness, dedication to residents and skills

Garden Terrace managers describe personal support worker (PSW) Sandra Goddard as a hard-working, resident-focused team member who is always looking out for residents’ best interests.

Sandra has been named the Kanata, Ont. long-term care home’s 2018 Everyday Hero Award recipient. Those who work with her say she is a natural when it comes to being on the BSO (Behavioural Supports Ontario) team and that she has a strong skill set when it comes to working with residents living with cognitive impairment.

Director of care Christine Ritchie commends Sandra’s work with residents who have cognitive impairment, noting the PSW works to build relationships with residents, their families and her colleagues.

When Sandra is working in her role as a BSO team member, she can often be found having tea with residents, playing games, giving manicures or doing crafts with residents who have dementia, Christine adds.

“Our staff and resident families count on Sandra for her quiet, knowledgeable approach with (residents who have dementia), she says.

Assistant director of care Michelle Dawson says Sandra is an “inspiration”; a staff member who always goes above the call of duty to help residents and their families, even if that means staying after her shift is over.

“She learns the needs of each resident quickly and ensures she delivers the best care she can – she truly cares,” Michelle says.

Registered practical nurse Kevin Montero also applauds Sandra’s ability to communicate and care for residents living with dementia and enhance their quality of life.

“She is drawn towards (residents affected by dementia), and with her calming, soothing voice and her delicate manner is usually able to get to the root cause as to what may be bothering a resident,” he says. “(Sandra is) always smiling, always positive. A perfect choice to be a BSO representative.”

The Everyday Hero Award is given out annually by each of OMNI Health Care’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.
