LINDSAY, Ont. – Frost Manor team members celebrated their volunteers April 5 by hosting a Mexican-themed luncheon in honour of the people who generously donate their time to enhancing the quality of life for the Lindsay long-term care home’s 62 residents.
While Frost Manor celebrates its volunteers every April during National Volunteer Week, this was the first time team members created a themed event for the occasion.
Nutritional care manager Zach Jarvis and his team created a top-notch Mexican lunch featuring chicken chimichangas (a type of deep-fried burrito), Mexican corn, herbed wild rice, and Mexican chocolate cake was served for dessert.
Zach and his team also prepared jars of corn salsa that were adorned with thank-you notes for volunteers to take home.
“They did an amazing job creating such an authentic Mexican meal, right down to the dessert,” Frost Manor life enrichment co-ordinator Lyndsay Burton tells The OMNIway.
Team members went all-out decorating Frost Manor’s activity room with a Mexican fiesta theme, and managers wore sombreros while serving lunch to the 28 volunteers attending.
Lyndsay thanked the volunteers for their hard work throughout the year. The 40 people who volunteer at Frost Manor, she notes, help residents and team members in a wide variety of ways, from providing residents with one-to-one time, to assisting with feeding, to helping with outings.
“We try to celebrate our volunteers every day, but we wanted to make a special day just for them to show our appreciation for everything they do throughout the year,” Lyndsay says.
“Our volunteers are so valuable to us; they help with a lot of our programming and they really help enrich the lives of our residents.”
April 7-13 was National Volunteer Week 2019. The week is marked by events nationwide that celebrate volunteers, and all they do to enrich the lives of others. This year marks the 78th National Volunteer Week.
