Brittney Sharpe named home’s 2019 Inspired Leader

Brittney Sharpe’s colleagues at Frost Manor say the registered nurse embodies OMNI Health Care’s core values – especially fun and laughter, creativity, friendliness and integrity – through her work every day at the Lindsay long-term care home, which is why they nominated her for the Inspired Leadership Award.

“Most noticeable in her leadership is her integrity; Brittney does what is right and not necessarily what is easy,” her co-workers say in their nomination. “This transparency has strengthened the bond between the staff, residents and families.”

Brittney, who has been a registered nurse at Frost Manor for three years, was presented with her Inspired Leadership Award during a ceremony at the home on Aug. 6.

Brittney first worked as a personal support worker (PSW) before completing her bachelor of science in nursing. Having worked as a PSW, Brittney understands the issues PSWs face, and on any given day she can be found on the floor helping with lift transfers, changing bed linens, assisting with a bath, wiping floors and serving in the dining room, Frost Manor team members say.

“Brittney is very supportive, (and she) always displays a calm demeanour, and this strength enables her to keep her shift under control,” Frost Manor team members write. “Her nursing knowledge and passion for caring for people is evident when observed caring for residents with responsive behaviours and providing palliative care.”

Brittney’s co-workers say the RN will answer questions for team members and takes time to explain and empower staff on the necessity of quality improvement initiatives in the home.

When the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care awarded homes funding for increased nursing hours, a quality risk RN position was created and Brittney promptly tendered her application.

Once awarded this new role, Brittney was passionate about focusing on improving residents’ lives. She motivated, inspired and challenged peers to be the best they could be.

“Brittney is very professional, (she) works hard to complete all tasks and has a resident-first focused attitude which makes working with her pure pleasure.”

OMNI’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented annually to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values. Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work.
