Everyday Hero awardee brings her heart to work

Evelyn Dos Santos’ helpful, smiling presence gets noticed at Garden Terrace

“My heart is in this home.” That’s how Evelyn Dos Santos describes her relationship with  Garden Terrace, where she works as a housekeeping aide.

Dos Santos goes on to describe how much she appreciates the Kanata long-term care home and those who work there. “I love this place. People are very nice here,” she says.

Dos Santos also brings “heart” to her work through her warm smile and keen willingness to help out wherever needed.
“I like to clean,” she says.“So I always try to do my very best at my job every day. I make the residents feel comfortable, safe and make sure that their rooms are clean.”

Dos Santos was nominated by her peers to receive the OMNI Health Care 2016 Everyday Hero award for Garden Terrace.

The Everyday Hero award is given out annually by each of OMNI’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.

“Evelyn is always smiling and willing to assist,” administrator Christine Schyf says. “She works in our housekeeping department but has also been seen in the dietary department helping washing dishes before the start of her shift because she heard the department was short staffed.”

Dos Santos, who learned she’d been chosen for the award from her manager, Jimm Cluff, is quietly appreciative. “I just say thank you very much for giving me that award. I’m so happy,” she says. “That’s all.”
