Her enthusiasm and mindfulness has been recognized by her peers, who nominated Tanya for Frost Manor’s Inspired Leadership Award
Since 2016, environmental services team member Tanya Smith has been organizing day trips for Frost Manor residents to her mother-in-law Nancy DeGeer’s farm just outside of Lindsay. There are many ways Tanya demonstrates leadership at Frost Manor, but this is one way that stands out for many of her colleagues and residents.
Tanya was nominated by her peers for Frost Manor’s 2018 Inspired Leadership Award. The trips Tanya organizes to the 99-acre farm have become much-loved outings. On each trip, residents spend several hours visiting with Nancy and her family, and they have opportunities to visit the horses, chickens, goats and other animals on the farm.
Tanya’s supervisor, environmental services manager Rick Riel, says Tanya is always mindful of residents and her co-workers and thinking of their needs.
“She will spend time talking to the employees … and making sure that she is not only performing her duties every day but that she is also bringing a little brightness every day (to her colleagues), Rick says of Tanya.
Tanya’s mindfulness, Rick adds, “comes into play (at the farm), where she got the idea of thinking of the residents as an extension of her own family and asking herself what can she do to bring some joy and happiness to these people’s lives.”
OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values. Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work.
Frost Manor hosted a ceremony Oct. 19 to present the home’s Inspired Leadership, Everyday Hero and Lifetime Achievement awards. Upon receiving her award, Tanya told the residents they inspire her every day.
“The bottom line is the residents: you guys make me happy all the time, you inspire me to be better, you inspire me to make a difference, even if it’s a small thing, every day, and you guys make it all worthwhile.”
