Brit Harrison says she plans to become a PSW
Brit Harrison says she’s enjoying her high school co-op placement at Springdale Country Manor, noting the Peterborough County long-term care home is a place she’d like to eventually work.
A Grade 12 student at Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute in Peterborough, Brit began her placement at Springdale Country Manor about three months ago. Brit says she plans to become a personal support worker (PSW).
Prior to coming to the Peterborough County long-term care home for her placement, Brit spoke with her co-op adviser at Kenner Collegiate who recommended she go to Springdale Country Manor, since other students have had successful placements there.
“I’m in Grade 12 and I am going to be taking a PSW course at Fleming College in the fall, so I was really looking to get a placement in a field that I could potentially be going into, just to get a feel for (the profession) to see how I like it,” she tells The OMNIway.
And she hasn’t been disappointed.
“Honestly, I love it, it has been so much fun and I’m really enjoying it,” Brit says, adding she would like to work at Springdale Country Manor.
A typical day for Brit at Springdale Country Manor starts when she arrives at the home around breakfast time. She takes residents to the dining room and helps sets up the drink carts with juices, tea and coffee. She then helps with feeding.
Sonia Murney, Springdale Country Manor’s life enrichment co-ordinator, says Brit has an excellent rapport with residents and staff members and is doing a top-notch job.
“She’s amazing with the residents,” Sonia says.
