Co-op student enjoyed her Streamway placement so much she’s decided to return to volunteer

Streamway Villa resident Betty Cole and co-op student Taylor Stacey share some time at the Cobourg long-term care home’s piano.

Taylor Stacey says Streamway Villa has also ‘more than confirmed’ her ambition to pursue a nursing career

Taylor Stacey wrapped up her four-month co-op placement at Streamway Villa on Jan. 22, but the Grade 11 Cobourg Collegiate student says she will soon be returning to volunteer.

Taylor spoke with The OMNIway on the last day of her placement and told us her experience at the Cobourg long-term care home has also solidified her ambition to pursue studies in nursing, once she completes Grade 12.

“Before I came here I was thinking about becoming a nurse, which is part of the reason I applied to do a co-op placement here, and (being at Streamway Villa) has more than confirmed my thoughts,” Taylor says.

“I would definitely consider (a career in long-term care) after my experience here,” she says, adding she enjoys the relationships that can be built with residents.

Taylor says the interaction she has had with residents has been the most memorable part of her co-op placement because this has helped make a positive difference in residents’ lives.

For example, she became especially close with resident Betty Cole, with whom she would play the home’s piano.

Taylor says playing the piano brought back a lot of memories for Betty, something Streamway Villa life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) Christina Doughty also noticed.

In fact, residents also took a shine to Betty’s piano playing.

“All the residents will stop what they are doing to listen to Betty play,” Christina says.

Christina says she’s happy that Taylor will be returning to volunteer at Streamway Villa on weekends.

“Taylor is really one of a kind,” the LEC says. “She comes in and is always smiling. She’s intuitive, she is caring, (and) she is going to do really great things in the future.”

For Taylor, it was a natural decision to return as a volunteer, she says.

“I love it here; everybody is amazing.”
