Central location helping Streamway Villa engage in community activities

Streamway Villa

Residents and staff were able to attend a myriad of events and activities in downtown Cobourg this summer

Streamway Villa’s life enrichment team has been focusing on engaging with the local community as much as possible in 2019, and the fact that the 59-bed long-term care home is located in downtown Cobourg has made that mission easier, says life enrichment co-ordinator (LEC) Christina Doughty.

Christina says since Streamway Villa is close to the spots where much of Cobourg’s action takes place, it’s easy to take residents to places they enjoy visiting.

Whether it’s popping into the many shops and restaurants that line King Street or heading to Victoria Park for an event, there has been much for residents to see and do this summer, the LEC says.

“We did a lot of outings to the downtown core this summer; we are still trying to get people active in the community while the weather is holding up; that’s one of the biggest goals in our department right now,” Christina tells The OMNIway.

Some of these outings included participating in the Cobourg Canada Day parade, attending the 13th annual Northumberland Ribfest and Music Festival, going to the Sandcastle Festival, and taking in sidewalk sales and visiting restaurants.

“We are just so lucky because we are able to get our residents down there in their wheelchairs, (and) we don’t need to spend our budgets on transportation,” she says.

Christina also sends out a big thank-you to the volunteers who have helped make these outings successful.

“The volunteers have been nothing short of amazing this year,” she says.
