Residents have been enjoying themselves by sharing stories and even discussing how to make the perfect toasted marshmallow
Frost Manor residents have answered the age-old question: how do you toast the perfect marshmallow around a campfire? The answer: you hold it over the flames just long enough to get a nice golden colour.
This was among the discussions residents have been having during biweekly campfire programs the Lindsay long-term care home has been hosting since July.
Team members have been setting up a propane fire pit in Frost Manor’s therapeutic garden to host the campfires every other Friday evening. Residents toast marshmallows, make s’mores and cook hot dogs as part of the activity.
While the campfires have been excellent forums to take advantage of warm summer evenings, they’ve also proven to be the perfect tool to engage residents in reminiscing. Residents have been recalling fond memories and have been having conversations about sitting around campfires with their families, Frost Manor life enrichment co-ordinator Lyndsay Irwin tells The OMNIway.
“This program creates wonderful reminiscent discussion about spending time outdoors (and) camping for the residents,” Lyndsay says.
“The residents also enjoy hearing campfire songs and ghost stories. … This program has really stood out for me because right from the moment the fire is lit the residents start telling their stories.”
The campfires have become popular with residents, and there has been a high attendance rate, Lyndsay adds.
“The residents have never had a campfire program before, so this is something really different for them,” she says.
Lyndsay says her favourite campfire this summer was on Aug. 30, when that evening’s event celebrated National Toasted Marshmallow Day.
“It was really fun getting all messy with the marshmallows and talking about how to toast the perfect marshmallow,” she says.
