CAMPBELLFORD, Ont. – In the span of only three months, Corey Grant has gone from a dietary aide at Burnbrae Gardens to becoming the Campbellford long-term care home’s nutritional care manager (NCM).

Corey started working as a dietary aide at Burnbrae Gardens three months ago, but after John Wickert left to become NCM at Riverview Manor, Corey was asked to fill the vacancy.

“I was surprised and grateful,” Corey says, of moving into a managerial position so quickly. “I had just moved to the area and was trying to find work, and Burnbrae Gardens really suits me for a lot of reasons.”

One of these reasons is that working at Burnbrae Gardens is “incredibly rewarding,” Corey says. Every day, through his work, Corey says he is able to make a difference in the lives of the 43 people who call Burnbrae Gardens home.

“Every day the residents motivate me, and I feel very honoured to have a part of their time here, and the quality of life they have here is amazing, and the people I work with are amazing,” Corey says.

“There is so much care going around in all directions, so it’s really inspiring for me.”

Corey says enhancing residents’ meal service is an important part of the quality care Burnbrae Gardens delivers to residents. Therefore, listening to residents is an important function of his role, he says.

“I try really hard to listen to the residents and focus on their needs; I’m really focused on that,” he says.

“I feel that there is nothing else I am here for except to try to enhance the residents’ quality of life.”

Burnbrae Gardens administrator and life enrichment co-ordinator April Faux says the residents have taken to Corey and his ideas, one of which is to bring more international food to Burnbrae Gardens.

“The residents have nothing but great things to say about him, and he has so many great ideas,” April says.
