A 2019 Inspired Leadership Award recipient, Mary ‘is truly a wonderful asset to all residents, staff and families’
One thing Burnbrae Gardens personal support worker Juanita Baird has noticed about her co-worker Mary Castellano in her years working with her is Mary’s ability to brighten other people’s day.
Another thing Juanita has noticed about Mary, an environmental services aide at the Campbellford long-term care home, is her concern about her colleagues’ well-being.
It’s for these reasons Juanita nominated Mary for Burnbrae Gardens’ 2019 Inspired Leadership Award.
“I’ve watched for the last couple of years how Mary goes over and above her role as an environmental aide,” Juanita says.
“She just has this knack for making people laugh and for getting people involved.”
Juanita says Mary will do the simplest of things to make people happy, such as brightening the mood with her “infectious smile” and laughter or bringing in homemade baked treats to share.
This, Juanita says, keeps the morale high at Burnbrae Gardens.
Mary also focuses her cheery nature on residents. Juanita says Mary will often spend time with residents after her shift ends to show them photos of her horses or to share stories.
Mary has also persuaded many Burnbrae Gardens staff members to lead healthy, less stressful lifestyles, Juanita notes. She has even developed a group class at a local gym, and she often brings healthy snack options for people.
“She is truly a wonderful asset to all residents, staff and families, and we are very lucky to have her as one of our employees,” Juanita says of Mary.
OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented annually to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values. Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work.
Mary was presented with her Inspired Leadership Award during an Oct. 25 ceremony at the home. Burnbrae Gardens’ Everyday Hero and Lifetime Achievement awards were also presented during the event. OMNI’s Elisabeth Hinton Memorial Award was presented to director of care Laurie Gibson.
