Never Too Late to Realize Your Dreams initiative comes through again

Since moving into Almonte Country Haven in 2009, Pat Taylor has ridden in an 18-wheeler, a Cessna plane and now a limousine through the home’s Never Too Late to Realize Your Dreams initiative.

On Nov. 12, the 70-year-old Taylor got into a limo, courtesy of TIP Limousine Service, and went for a ride to a truck stop 30 kilometres away in Arnprior. There she had lunch with her friend Nancy and administrator Marilyn Colton, who organized the limo ride.

Taylor, who is interested in different modes of transportation, was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. The Never Too Late to Realize Your Dreams program is designed to ensure residents at the Lanark County long-term care home can have a special request granted.

When Tom Toomey, owner of TIP Limousine Service, was contacted by the home to inquire about hiring a limo, he offered Taylor a free ride. Staff members gathered outside the home to wish Taylor a happy trip when Toomey came to pick up the resident and Colton.

Natasha Visneskie, Almonte Country Haven’s resident services co-ordinator, says the Never Too Late to Realize Your Dreams program has a positive impact on residents.

“There are no words to describe how much (the program) means to the residents,” Visneskie says.

Visneskie says the Never Too Late to Realize Your Dreams initiative is quite popular at the home, and the Almonte Country Haven team has organized several other special events.

“We also do little things on a day-to-day basis,” she says. “We have one resident who has not been out to a restaurant in quite some time, so we took him out to a restaurant here in Almonte and he got to have a beer and a nice lunch.”
