Riverview Manor residents enjoy a safe, modified Halloween
A favourite activity was making jack-o’-lanterns by placing stickers on pumpkins
Halloween festivities started early and were carried all the way up until Oct. 31 at Riverview Manor this year.
Due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, programming was modified for Halloween 2020 at the Peterborough long-term care home, but residents still enjoyed the activities offered, says life enrichment aide Adam Wicklum.
For instance, pumpkin carving is a favourite Halloween activity at Riverview Manor, but to keep groups small and safe this year residents were provided with jack-o’-lantern stickers to place on pumpkins rather than carving the eyes, nose and mouth on them when Halloween festivities kicked off at the home on Oct. 21.
Additionally, there were lots of different styles of jack-o’-lantern facial features for residents to choose from, including cat, owl and pirate designs.
Residents then placed their finished jack-o’-lanterns on the windowsills in both dining rooms. Some residents took the pumpkins back to their rooms for Halloween decorations, Adam notes.
Adam organized the event for residents living on the south side of Riverview Manor, while LEA Marline Price organized the event for residents living on the north side.
Adam says there are benefits to using stickers on pumpkins rather than carving the features.
“(We can) get more done and they last longer,” he says.
During the week leading up to Halloween, residents were also treated to Halloween movies from Netflix as well as a variety of games, Adam says.
