Fred Pym wanted to take a cruise for years but it never happened until he moved to Village Green

Village Green resident Fred Pym had always wanted to take a dinner cruise. For years he had saved money and planned trips, but never went.

On Aug. 23, Pym’s dream of taking a cruise came true when he and other residents at the Napanee long-term care home went on Village Green’s annual tour of the Thousand Islands. Pym couldn’t be happier with the experience.

“I’ve been trying for a long time to go on a boat cruise, but I just could never make it, but I sure enjoyed it,” Pym tells The OMNIway. “I was really happy (to learn) we were going on a cruise.”

Pym, who has lived at Village Green since May, says his favourite part of the cruise was the on-board entertainment, which was provided by Billy Bridger, a noted singer and impersonator.

Pym says the cruise has been one more aspect to life at Village Green he has enjoyed.

“Everything they do here (at Village Green) I am happy with,” he says.

Village Green residents and staff members take a cruise every August around the Thousand Islands, a group of more than 1,800 islands in the St. Lawrence River. This year about 30 residents and staff members went on the cruise.

“It was a beautiful day and the lunch was amazing,” says life enrichment co-ordinator Karen Coulter, noting guests had a choice of roast beef, chicken marsala, salmon or a vegetarian dish.

Coulter says a lot of work went into organizing this year’s tour, adding a “generous donation” from a family allowed four more residents to go on the outing.

Every staff member helped make the trip possible, Coulter says. From the life enrichment staff to the front-line staff getting the residents ready in the morning to the hairdressers to the volunteers to the bus driver and all the people at 1000 Islands Cruises, everyone pitched in to make sure the residents enjoyed the outing.

“The whole team made this such a success,” Coulter says. “It was such a perfect day.”
