A recent outbreak at Streamway Villa left residents and staff members at the Cobourg long-term care home in need of some Christmas cheer. So, when the outbreak was lifted, everyone went straight into “Christmas mode,” says life enrichment co-ordinator Christina Verleysen.
On Dec. 15, a group of 22 kindergarten students from St. Michael Elementary School stopped by to sing Christmas songs, which the residents “loved,” Christina says.
“We had such an incredible morning here yesterday (Dec. 15), which was really needed after the last couple of weeks here,” she tells The OMNIway.
The children also brought handmade Christmas cards to give residents, which made everyone happy, she adds.
“This warmed my heart immensely to see the smiles and happy tears on our residents,” Christina says. “In turn, our residents shared with the children some of their favourite Christmas stories while growing up.”
As a testament to how much everyone appreciated having the children visit, several residents went straight to their phones to call their friends and family to share with them the happiness the children brought to the home, Christina says.
With the outbreak now behind everyone, Streamway Villa will continue the Christmas cheer this week. The home has special entertainment planned for residents and there will be Christmas theme days, including a much-anticipated funny and ugly Christmas sweater day.
