Fundraising event a step towards goal of raising $5K during next year

Getting hit in the face with an apple-sauce-and-whipped-cream pie was a small price to pay for a good cause at Wildwood Care Centre on July 16.

The St. Marys, Ont. long-term care home hosted a fundraiser in support of its Relay for Life team that day, but suspense was building for a month to decide who would be the manager to get hit with a pie, says life enrichment aide Emily McNaughton.

As part of the pie-in-the-face challenge, each Wildwood Care Centre manager’s picture was put into a pie tin at the nurses’ station. During the next several weeks, staff members, residents, families and visitors dropped money into the tin representing the manager they wanted to see get a pie in the face.

The manager who had the least amount of money in their tin got to throw the pie in the face of the manager with the most.

With $44 in his tin, environmental services manager Ray Iredale was the manager who raised the most money, so he had the honours of getting a pie in the face. Food services manager Julie Brown got to throw the pie.

The pie-in-the-face challenge was held at noon and many of the home’s 60 residents were on hand to watch the fun unfold.

The event collected $153 to be put towards the Relay for Life team’s goal of raising $5,000 during the next year.

In June, 13 staff members and families from Wildwood Care Centre participated in a Relay for Life event in Stratford, Ont., raising about $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Relay for Life is a fundraising event held at running tracks in communities across Canada and the world. Participants take turns walking or running to raise money for cancer societies.
