Retired PSW Holly Bourgon always knew about each resident, and her advice was often sought by her colleagues
For many years, personal support worker (PSW) Holly Bourgon was known as the “go-to person” around Woodland Villa.
Holly, who retired from the Long Sault, Ont. long-term care home a few months back, is the recipient of Woodland Villa’s 2017 Everyday Hero Award. Her peers nominated her for the accolade because she always knew so much about each resident.
“During her tenure, she was the go-to person,” explains administrator Janna Sabourin. “She knew everything about every resident and would easily and effectively tell you how to do things. I admired this about Holly.”
Before Janna became Woodland Villa’s administrator in February, she served as a nurse and director of care at the home. And she always found herself turning to Holly for advice, she says.
“I went to Holly all the time for questions, and she always knew the answers,” Janna says. “She was amazing with the residents, a delightful team member and a PSW who most of us today could say ‘she trained us,’ including me.”
Janna says Holly is missed by Woodland Villa residents and staff members. Holly was presented with the Everyday Hero Award on Aug. 16 during a ceremony at the home’s annual Country Fair.
“I want to wish Holly a happy retirement as well as congratulations on being this year’s recipient of the Everyday Hero Award,” Janna says.
The Everyday Hero Award is given out annually by each of OMNI Health Care’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.
OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont. in May. Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.
