Volunteers revamp Streamway Villa’s garden during Day of Caring

Residents can enjoy new flowers and a freshly painted picnic table, thanks to volunteers from SABIC

Streamway Villa was one of the sites selected by the Northumberland United Way to receive a helping hand from volunteers on the 21st Day of Caring, an annual event where employees from local industries and organizations devote time to helping others.

On June 1, 10 employees from the SABIC plant in Cobourg came to Streamway Villa to assist with projects to help beautify the home. The volunteers helped Streamway Villa team members with the home’s garden. The volunteers cleared out weeds, painted a picnic table and planted flowers around the courtyard.

“That was huge for us because we don’t have a large budget for gardening,” Streamway Villa life enrichment co-ordinator Christina Doughty says.

This was the first time Streamway Villa has had Day of Caring volunteers come to the home.

Northumberland United Way director of resource development Dianne Turk says in the past 10 years the organization has provided volunteers for 30 to 45 projects annually in the region. This year volunteer organizations and companies completed 40 projects in Cobourg, Port Hope and Colborne.

While the United Way organizes each Day of Caring, the volunteer organizations provide the money to build a budget for supplies.

Dianne says she’s happy to hear Streamway Villa is elated by the result of the work volunteers put forth at the home.

“We were very happy to be able to help at Streamway Villa this year,” Dianne says. “It is the first time that we have done any projects there, and I hope that the residents are able to enjoy the flower beds.”
