Casey the cat has spent most of his 18 years at the home
One of Village Green’s longtime team members plays a unique but important role at the Greater Napanee long-term care home – and you might be surprised to learn who that is.
Meet Casey, an 18-year-old cat who has been providing companionship to Village Green residents for most of his life. The positive impact that animals have on people living in long-term care homes is well documented, and Casey has been no exception, says administrator Linda Pierce.
“Casey has been a blessing in our home; he has blended so well with the staff and residents,” she tells The OMNIway.
Most notably, Casey brings a special gift to residents receiving palliative care at Village Green, Linda says. Casey, the administrator notes, can sense when someone is going through the end-of-life stage and has helped many residents through that journey.
“He … has a magic radar when someone is at end of life and often will visit to provide additional comfort at that time,” Linda says. “He is showing his age and of course we do have some residents that don’t prefer cats, but overall he has been a great cat.”
Linda says the contributions to all team members at Village Green are important to helping create a family atmosphere and enhancing the quality of life for people living at the home, and that includes Casey.
“(We) are aware of the value of pet visits, and so proudly we salute Casey for his many years of devotion to the people at Village Green,” she says.
Village Green is celebrating 40 years in the community of Selby in 2018. Throughout 2018, The OMNIway will be featuring stories and videos about home’s residents, team members and volunteers.
