New initiative brings OMNI’s core value of fun and laughter to the forefront
After Kentwood Park team members completed a WorkLife Plus survey to help prepare for next year’s accreditation, the Picton long-term care home’s managers noticed staff morale scores were low, so they created an action plan to make coming to work a more enriching experience.
The result was Spirit Days, an initiative which embraces OMNI Health Care’s core value of fun and laughter. Each week now, Kentwood Park dedicates one or two days to a theme. The theme may include dressing up in costumes or serving homemade stews and soups for staff meals on all shifts.
So far, Kentwood Park has had a country-and-western day, where staff dressed up and the managers served pulled pork on a bun, chili and dessert; a crazy hair day and a pyjama day.
Games and prize giveaways sometimes complement theme days. The team has even added some fun to winning prizes, says Kentwood Park administrator Tina Cole.
During one Spirit Day, game prizes were wrapped in plastic cling film and staff members had to open the prizes while wearing oven mitts – not an easy task.
“(Spirit Days) is a lot of fun and it’s a great team-building exercise,” Tina tells The OMNIway, adding some of December’s theme days will include a red-and-green day, that will feature a lasagna lunch; an ugly Christmas sweater day, Christmas movie trivia and a managers’ breakfast.
Tina says the initiative has been successful and staff morale is high.
“The feedback from staff has been very positive,” she says. “We look forward to continuing (Spirit Days) in the new year.”
