Administrator says Denise brings hope, purpose and belonging to Village Green every day

Village Green registered practical nurse (RPN) Denise Simpson delivers OMNI Health Care’s mission of “bringing hope, purpose and belonging” to the Greater Napanee long-term care home’s residents, families and staff members every day, says administrator Linda Pierce.

For Denise’s dedication to others, coupled with her compassion for residents and commitment to enhance quality at Village Green, the RPN was nominated by Linda for the home’s 2017 Inspired Leadership Award.

Denise received the accolade at a ceremony during Village Green’s annual Halloween party.

“I feel she is a compassionate, caring nurse, with an understanding about the journey (and) changes in a resident’s medical status,” Linda says. “She is open with communication and sharing of information that brings about change.”

Linda notes that Denise has shown initiative with several of Village Green’s projects over the years.  Recently, Linda says, Denise has been engaged in the Behavioural Supports Ontario initiative’s educational sessions, such as the Gentle Persuasive Approach and train-the-trainer education.

“(She) really steps to the mark in sharing valuable information that will make the residents’ stay at Village Green much more pleasant,” Linda says.

Denise also works on the floor to support quality initiatives with other members. She helps director of care Debbie McTaggart with auditing and reviewing statistical information for the purpose of improving care, Linda adds.

“Denise’s leadership skills involve really good communication, problem solving with resident care, documentation completion, sharing of her skills, support of education (and) one-to-one direct contact with the people,” Linda says.

“Denise shows up for her shifts and gets the job done. I feel that Denise is deserving of the Inspired Leadership Award for 2017.”

OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values. Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work.

OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont., in May.

Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.

Personal support worker Alison DeMarsh is the recipient of Village Green’s 2017 Everyday Hero Award. The OMNIway will be featuring a story about Alison in the coming days.
