Reliable, hardworking and resident-focused. These are some of the words Pleasant Meadow Manor environmental services manager Shari Bertrand uses to describe Anita Wesley.

And it’s for these reasons and many others that the Norwood long-term care home nominated environmental services staff member Anita Wesley for the Pleasant Meadow Manor 2016 Everyday Hero Award.

“Anita shows up for all of her shifts, she’s always happy, she is flexible if we need to change her routine and she spends time to find any articles residents may have lost in their laundry, and she will also hand-deliver laundry to residents,” Shari tells The OMNIway.

“Those are the things I see.”

The Everyday Hero is given out annually by each of OMNI’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.

Anita’s award was presented to her during the home’s Dec. 8 Christmas party for residents, family members, volunteers and staff. Life enrichment co-ordinator Chris Garden was presented with the home’s Inspired Leader Award at the ceremony.

Shari notes that because people working in environmental services departments help residents look after their personal property and are not managing direct care, there is often a special relationship between the department and residents.

Environmental services staff members, she adds, are truly “everyday heroes” simply because they can rearrange their schedules to spend extra one-to-one time with residents and still complete all their work on their shift, she notes.

Anita, who has worked at Pleasant Meadow Manor for 17 years, says she was “surprised but honoured” to be named the home’s Everyday Hero for 2016.

“It just goes to show how much they appreciate you,” she says.

Everyday Hero and Inspired Leader award recipients were announced at OMNI’s managers’ forum in Kingston in May. Since then, homes have been hosting their own award ceremonies to honour award recipients.
