Strong sense of community stemming from forum: new NCMs

Event served as opportunity to help newcomers see how OMNI works

June 1, 2011

For three OMNI Health Care nutritional care managers (NCMs), attending the organization's recent managers' forum at Fern Resort in Orillia served as an opportunity to meet others and experience the strong sense of community that comes with working in the organization.

Alex Achillini of Country Terrace, Dave Benn of Almonte Country Haven and Brian Rowbotham of West Lake Terrace say attending the forum, which ran May 9-11, helped strengthen ties between team members.

Achillini, who became Country Terrace's NCM in early May, says what he liked best about attending the managers' forum was the opportunity to meet his counterparts at other homes.

During the forum, Achillini says managers from other homes were approaching him to introduce themselves and welcome him to the OMNI family.

"People from other homes (approached) me and asked how I was doing, and (told) me that if I need anything to let them know," he says.

"And that makes me feel confident that I am part of the team, even if I am new. Everyone is willing to help you."

While Benn has been working at Almonte Country Haven since last year, this was his first time at the forum.

Like Achillini, Benn says attending the event brought home the same strong sense of community.

That said, Benn notes he has felt this way since he started last July.

"It has been like that since Day 1," says Benn. "Everybody's willing to help anybody out."

Rowbotham, whose first day on the job was spent at the forum, says the event was a "great experience."
"I never went through this kind of experience before with the other company I was with, and (it was) great just to see everybody so motivated and so energetic," he says.

OMNI's managers' forum is an annual event. A major theme of the forum centred on encouraging managers to think about the future of long-term care and the role their homes will play enhancing quality and innovation.
