Whether she's styling her grandmother's hair, working on puzzles or going to yard sales with her, Tiffany Martell enjoys close ties with her elderly family member.
It was the joy of that very relationship that prompted Martell to pursue a career in long-term care.
Working at both Pleasant Meadow Manor in Norwood and Burnbrae Gardens in Campbellford, Martell now cares for many seniors, while still supporting her grandma in her spare time.
"I thought why not make a career out of it," Martell says.
The life enrichment aide (LEA) is pleased she made the decision to go after her community and social services worker diploma, completing the job placement component of her schooling at Burnbrae Gardens.
"I love my job," Martell says.
The LEA views ensuring residents are happy as an important component of her job. She likes to entertain seniors and recently danced and played the piano for Pleasant Meadow Manor residents during a pub night.
"I like seeing them happy. I don't want them to be lonely or sad."
She begins her day by helping residents take part in a restorative walking activity, followed by another fitness program.
In the afternoon she assists with social activities and other entertainment. Martell, who lives in Campbellford, roughly splits her time between the two OMNI homes.
Martell enjoys the family environment OMNI homes provide and says the connection she has with residents is the most fulfilling aspect of her job.
"I'm really attached to the residents," says Martell.
As a result, she says she finds it particularly challenging when they pass away. "It's still really hard," she adds.
While she's satisfied with her current positions, Martell anticipates pursuing a management position later in her career.
