AURORA, Ont. — Willows Estate nutritional-care aide Bobbi-Jo Wright says learning new skills in conflict resolution was the main highlight from her perspective of a recent in-service presented by FCS International CEO Jayne Harvey. Wright says she enjoyed Harvey's presentation, which focused on how diversity may become a challenge in long-term care, as well as how conflicts can be dealt with in a supportive manner. "I thought (the presentation) was very good. She's very entertaining and she keeps you interested," says Wright. Wright says what impressed her most about Harvey's presentation is the fact that Harvey is a registered nurse (RN) who knows about the challenges front-line staff members face in long-term care homes. "She's an RN, and she taught us the way she would deal with issues on the job," explains Wright. "For example, instead of talking about things when others aren't around she says she would bring the whole team together and say, ‘Listen, this has been brought to my attention and we need to work together as a team and we need to solve this problem.' "She gave us real stories from her personal experience that we could relate to." Noted for peppering her presentations with humour, Harvey explains during her series on diversity that there are many creative solutions people can use to solve issues that may arise. "She was teaching us about different ways to go about that," says Wright. This series of presentations, which has been running since January and will continue into April, is the first time Harvey has presented to front-line staff members working in OMNI Health Care's 17 long-term care homes. Harvey has presented to OMNI managers many times in the past, including at last spring's managers' forum held at Fern Resort near Orillia. Gary Rose, Willows Estate's nutritional-care manager, has attended several of Harvey's presentations and says he has always enjoyed them. He adds that he's happy OMNI is providing staff members with the opportunity to have Harvey visit the homes to deliver her insightful in-services. "I'm impressed by Jayne Harvey, not just because of her wit, but she has a way of getting her points across," he says, adding that Harvey's presentations to front-line staff members have value-added benefits. "We (as managers) can direct staff using the ideas that Jayne gives us, but it's better if it comes straight from her. And the staff members loved her."
