Country Terrace showing the home has 'heart'Home raising money for relief in HaitiJanuary 26, 2010Residents and staff members at Country Terrace have been busy since Jan. 20 raising money for disaster relief in Haiti in the wake of the Jan. 12 earthquake that has devastated the Caribbean nation. As part of the Have a Heart for Haiti initiative, paper hearts with the names of people making donations have been sold for $2 each and are attached to a map of Haiti that has been placed on a wall in the home. Residents, staff members and families have been buying the hearts, which are sold along with a complementary sugar cookie. The Have a Heart for Haiti initiative is the creation of the London-area long-term care home's planning committee and was launched Jan. 20. Residents are contributing to the cause by helping with the baking. "The residents are baking the cookies (and) we're selling them," explains life enrichment co-ordinator Heather Whitfield. To date, Country Terrace has raised about $300 for the Haiti relief fund, says Whitfield. Whitfield notes that the home's commitment to raising funds for relief in Haiti illustrates OMNI's values and organizational culture. "We're spreading those good values throughout," she says. An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti Jan. 12, killing thousands of people and leaving much of the Caribbean nation in a state of ruin. Since then, OMNI Health Care-owned long-term care homes have been raising money for the relief effort.
