Alzheimer Society offers 'invaluable' services through partnerships: administrator

Staff training and supports have been priceless assets to home

September 9, 2009

Alzheimer Society of Canada chapters offer a wide range of "invaluable" services to long-term care homes and Maureen Imamovic, the administrator at Springdale Country Manor, says staff members and families have benefited from the home's partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough & Area.

Staff training and support services have been the most valuable assets through Springdale's relationship with the chapter, she adds.

"First of all, they can offer your family members support where we can't," says Imamovic.

If you have a good relationship with a chapter of the society, it can be a tremendous advantage to your home, she says.

"If you have a good partnership with the Alzheimer Society, you can phone them and say, 'I have a family member who is struggling, how can we help them?' The partnership is invaluable."

Through Springdale's partnership with the chapter, Imamovic says the society has been "a tremendous support for us."

"They have incredible information that they can bring to you if you have a partnership with them," she says.

While the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough & Area provides needed supports and educational in-services to Springdale Country Manor, the home, in turn, hosts fundraisers and other activities in support of the society.

Sarah Cook, the public education co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough & Area, underscores the important role the organization can play in providing supports to long-term care homes.

"We provide supports in lots of different ways to meet the unique needs of our clients," she explains.

"We offer support in terms of one-on-one support, as well as family and group support. Sometimes people can't come into the office to meet with us, so we will do a home visit."

The society also offers numerous pamphlets and educational materials to help support people affected by Alzheimer's disease, as well their families.
