SPRINGVILLE, Ont. – Registered nurse Melissa Tilley’s colleagues at Springdale Country Manor say she is a resident-focused team member who has a strong work ethic and is an “asset” to the home.

It’s for these and other attributes that Melissa has been presented with the Peterborough County long-term care home’s 2017 Inspired Leadership Award.

Melissa began her career at Springdale Country Manor in 2006. She brings a wealth of knowledge to residents and her co-workers every day, and she is a key part of enhancing quality of life for people living at the home, staff members say.

“Melissa’s skills provide quality of care for our residents; (she shows) leadership and compassion (and) she demonstrates good workmanship,” says health-care aide Marg Gregory.

In presenting Melissa with the Inspired Leadership Award during an Aug. 31 ceremony at the home, director of care Kathy Shewell said the RN is “eager” to take on new projects and tasks and demonstrates a lot of motivation in her work.

“She often sees projects to take on herself – she is an asset to the registered staff team,” Kathy said.

After receiving the award, Melissa told The OMNIway she was not expecting to be named an award recipient when she showed up to the home’s activity room for the presentation. Still, she said she she’s happy to be recognized with the accolade.

“I didn’t know I was getting the Inspired Leadership Award, but I feel very honoured to be recognized after more than 10 years of service – it’s very emotional,” she said.

OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leadership Award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values.

Inspired Leaders also possess outstanding leadership skills and are committed to their work. OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont., in May.

Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.
