Group member Garnet Powell reflects on performing for LTC home residents
For 15 years, Garnet Powell and other members of Tunes from the Past have been entertaining Frost Manor residents with musical favourites. The group of senior musicians has had such a positive impact on everyone at the Lindsay long-term care home that they have received an Ontario Volunteer Service Award after being nominated by the home.
Garnet, who was on hand during a presentation at the Lindsay Golf and Country Club May 5 to accept the award, says the eight Tunes from the Past members enjoy playing for residents at Frost Manor and other venues.
Their popularity has grown in the region over the years, he adds.
“We were a bunch of singers who were all retired and we just started playing about 17 or 18 years ago. Word got around and today we play at eight different places,” Garnet says, adding the group plays songs that bring back memories for residents.
“(Our music) is well-received by the residents. We play a lot of the older popular tunes of the 40s and 50s that the big bands played.”
Garnet adds the group will also play polka and square-dance numbers – anything that the residents grew up with.
When the group’s members see the reaction their music gets from residents, they know they’ve made a difference, Garnet says.
“Some (residents) will have their lips moving and others will have their feet moving,” he says.
Garnet says that while he and other members of Tunes from the Past were not expecting to be awarded for their volunteer work, they are happy to accept the honour.
“We’re very pleased; it’s very nice of (Frost Manor to nominate us),” he says. “We just enjoy playing for the different homes because we know so many of the people.”
Ontario Volunteer Service Awards are given out annually to recognize volunteers across the province who have made outstanding contributions to organizations in their community. People are nominated for awards by employees of the organizations where they volunteer.
