ST. MARYS, Ont. – Shortly after she became a registered practical nurse (RPN), Stephanie Bauman was looking for a job and found work at Wildwood Care Centre.

What she didn’t know was that she would still be working at the St. Marys, Ont. long-term care home nearly seven years later.

“At first, I was just looking for any type of job, but once I started working here I enjoyed having a relationship with the residents,” Bauman tells The OMNIway.

“Also, the atmosphere and working with the staff here has been great.”

Bauman is the recipient of Wildwood Care Centre’s 2016 Inspired Leader Award. Administrator Scott Walsh says Bauman is deserving of the accolade because she has always taken on a leadership role in her position.

For example, she is Wildwood Care Centre’s Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) RPN and has undertaken training to help reduce agitation and improve quality of life among residents living with cognitive impairment.

She is also the backup for the home’s RAI co-ordinator.

“And Stephanie will do these things on top of everything else she does as an RPN,” Walsh says. “Steph is the first one you can go to if you have any questions, she’ll help out, she’ll give advice and she is years above her age with respect to the experience she has in the home.”

Asked how she feels about receiving the award, Bauman says she wasn’t expecting it.

“I was a little shocked; I didn’t expect everyone to nominate me, but it feels good and it feels like you’re being rewarded,” she says.

Wildwood Care Centre handed out the Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero awards Sept. 21 as part of the home’s Employee Appreciation Week celebrations.

OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leader award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate OMNI’s mission, vision and values and outstanding leadership and dedication to their work.

Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero award recipients were announced at OMNI’s managers’ forum in Kingston in May. Since then, homes have been hosting their own award ceremonies to honour award recipients.
