Managers host daily events to acknowledge staff and their work
Front-line staff members at Garden Terrace were celebrated for their hard work and dedication to residents and to each other during National Nursing Week.
Each day the management team at the Ottawa-area long-term care home hosted something special events as a way of saying thank you to staff members.
On Tuesday, managers assisted front-line staff members in what was called Boss Your Boss Day. This day was especially appreciated by nurses and personal support workers (PSWs), says administrator Christine Schyf.
“We got a really good reaction from our residents, too,” Christine tells The OMNIway. “We wanted staff members to be able to go on breaks on time and have some support from us, (and) it was also a good way for us to get to know the residents a little bit better.”
On one day front-line staff members on all shifts were treated to pizza while the registered staff had a lunch-and-learn session on diabetes in seniors. On another day, managers were giving out colourful candy floss to people on all shifts.
For fun, Michelle Dawson, Garden Terrace’s director of care, made nurse hats similar to the ones she wore as a nurse working in the U.K.
There was a potluck lunch to cap off Nursing Week on Friday. The lunch included the “silly awards” which were bestowed upon staff members in a variety of categories.
In all, Christine says Nursing Week was a good way to show colleagues that everyone at Garden Terrace is on the same team as well as paying homage to staff members.
“We wanted to recognize all of our staff for what they do because it’s not an easy job,” she says.
National Nursing Week 2017 was May 8-14. The week, which is promoted by the Canadian Nurses Association, is set aside to acknowledge nurses for their work. Long-term care homes, retirement homes and health-care organizations dedicate the week every year to acknowledge nursing teams.
