‘If we could only clone Kellie,’ her manager says

Garden Terrace life enrichment co-ordinator Sylvia Monette sits in her office, watching life enrichment aide Kellie Bennett leading the Moving to Music program. Sylvia sees that the activity room is full of residents who are loudly singing with Kellie. All are doing their exercises and smiling.

As residents are leaving the program, laughter and comments about how fun the program was can be heard. While the residents wait for the elevator, they begin again to sing.

This is a typical scene Sylvia says she sees when Kellie is working.

“Kellie always puts the residents first,” Sylvia says. “Kellie takes residents to programs, even if she knows they cannot participate, as she knows they will get the social time from the program.”

One of Kellie’s major strengths is the compassion she shows all residents, Sylvia says. She never rushes people and is an excellent listener. If a resident has a concern, Kellie will bring it to the attention of staff members and will follow up to make sure the resident’s issue has been addressed.

If a resident is exhibiting a behaviour, Kellie will try to find out what’s causing the resident to be agitated, Sylvia adds.

Kellie, Sylvia adds, is always thinking about the residents, staying longer than her scheduled shift and coming in when she is not scheduled to work. She also takes every course that she’s offered to help her better care for residents.

“If we could only clone Kellie,” she says.

Sylvia nominated Kellie for the Ottawa-area long-term care home’s Everyday Hero Award. Kellie received the award at a recent ceremony.

The Everyday Hero Award is given out annually by each of OMNI Health Care’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.

OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont., in May. Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.
