Burnbrae staff member’s kitchen creativity helps resident enjoy Christmas present

Janet McInroy’s pureed dessert leaves chocolate lover with a big smile

Burnbrae Gardens nutritional care aide Janet McInroy recently made one chocolate-loving resident’s day when she made sure he could enjoy a chocolate bar he received as a Christmas present.

In a recent OMNIway story we told you how students from Campbellford District High School brought Christmas gifts for Burnbrae Gardens residents in December.

One of the residents received some chocolate bars from the students and was looking forward to enjoying them. However, the resident has challenges with swallowing.

That’s when Janet stepped in with an idea. She melted some butter in a pot, then added broken-up pieces of the World’s Finest Chocolate Bar and mixed it with a small amount of peanut butter to get a smooth consistency.

The resident, who is on a pureed diet, was served the chocolate smoothie and he ate the entire bowl, finishing with a big smile, Janet says.

“His face just lit right up,” she tells The OMNIway. “That made me feel really good. I worked this morning and I made him another two – one for dessert after lunch and one for dessert after dinner.”

Administrator and life enrichment co-ordinator April Faux called The OMNIway when she learned about Janet’s success.

“We want to give Janet kudos for making the resident’s day and allowing him to enjoy the gift the students gave him,” April says. “The smile on his face at lunchtime was amazing.”
